When might my child need general anesthesia for his or her dental work?

Finding a pediatric dentist who can help your child feel at ease during their dental visits can be difficult. Fortunately, at Park View Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, we are well-versed in providing care for the youngest of patients! Our pediatric dental practice focuses on making every appointment a positive experience. When children are uneasy about visiting the dentist, their parents are welcome to ask our team about our sedation options.

What sedation options are available?

Park View Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics is pleased to provide several different sedation options for children who may be anxious about having dental work completed. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is commonly used for children to make them feel more relaxed. Oral conscious sedation can be used for patients with more moderate anxiety. For the most anxious patients, or those who are unable to sit still for extensive procedures, we offer general anesthesia.

What is general anesthesia and when might my child need it?

General anesthesia is a deep sedation like the kind used for medical surgeries. Patients are put completely under during their appointment and will not have memories of the work done. The anesthesia can wear off with time after it has been stopped. Most children are sleepy for the remainder of their day after having general anesthetic used to perform their procedures. Whenever possible, we recommend more conservative options to our patients to reduce discomfort.

What if my child isn’t nervous about their procedure?

That’s great! We typically don’t recommend patients with no anxieties or fears who can follow directions in the dental chair to use sedation. We reserve sedation methods for children who may be undergoing more invasive procedures and might benefit from some level of sedation to complete their treatments.
