Everything You Need to Know About Pediatric Sedation

pediatric sedationIt’s normal for your child to experience anxiety about going to the dentist. Even some adults still have severe dental anxiety! At Park View Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we offer pediatric sedation dentistry options for your child because we feel it’s important to give your child a pleasant dental experience so their fears of the dentist don’t continue into adulthood.

When Might Your Child Need Pediatric Sedation?

Pediatric sedation is a great way to ease your child’s nerves and fears during one of our dental procedures. At Parkview Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we offer pediatric sedation for fillings, crowns, root canals, or tooth extractions. For your convenience, we have three different options when it comes to sedation, including:

  • Nitrous Oxide: Often known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is commonly used for pediatric dentistry as it is the least invasive and safest way to reduce a child’s anxiety. This sedation method allows your child to stay awake while being relaxed and not feel any pain.
  • In-office Sedation: This type of sedation is used with IV medications to help your child feel more comfortable and less anxious during their dental visit. During your consultation with our board-certified anesthesiologist, you will go over the different types of medications that can be used.
  • General Anesthesia: We offer one type of sedation that allows your child to fall asleep for their dental procedure. If your child is using general anesthesia, they will be treated at Northwell-Lenox Hill Hospital. Usually, we only offer this method of sedation for children who have special needs, suffer from extreme anxiety, or need an extensive amount of dental work done.

Is it Safe?

Most parents whose children are offered sedation services often ask, “Is pediatric sedation safe for my child?” And the answer is yes! Pediatric sedation is completely safe, and if you’re feeling uneasy about it, our well-educated staff can walk you through the entire process.
