Preventing cavities during the holidays
There are many steps parents can take to reduce their child’s risk of developing tooth decay during the holiday seasons. Below are just a few recommendations that parents can employ to protect their child’s smile:
- Reduce sugar intake. One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of developing decay or disease is to reduce sugar intake. This is often easier said than done, especially during the holidays when cookies and candy are prominent. Our dentists recommend offering healthy snacks alongside sugary snacks, and ensuring children brush and floss their teeth after indulging in sugary snacks.
- Consider how long the food will be in the mouth. Children who graze on sugary foods are at a higher risk of developing cavities than those who eat one and brush their teeth. Candy canes, cookies, and sugary pies left on the surfaces of the teeth and gums can contribute to cavities and should be addressed as soon as possible with brushing and flossing.
- Rinse the mouth with water. After enjoying sugary snacks, if children are not in a situation to brush or floss immediately, they can rinse their mouth with water to help remove sugars from the enamel of teeth.
- Maintain routine cleanings and examinations at the dentist. Our team encourages parents to bring their children in on a regular basis to have their teeth cleaned and examined to spot the early signs of decay or disease.
