Pediatric Amalgam Fillings in NYC
When cavities occur and the less-invasive treatment option of resin infiltration is not a suitable alternative, the experienced pediatric dentists at Park View Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in NYC will turn to dental fillings, including amalgam fillings (silver fillings), in order to restore affected teeth. Based on a patient’s unique needs, the appropriate type of pediatric cavity filling will be determined.
For children who are unable to cope with the delivery of dental care, who have a high level of dental anxiety, or who have special needs, we offer various sedation dentistry options for completing an amalgam cavity filling procedure.
As the premier pediatric dental practice in New York City’s Upper East Side, we’ve built our solid reputation not only on our skills but also our dedication to offering dental care with a little extra care. Learn more about pediatric amalgam fillings below, or request an appointment online.
What are amalgam fillings?
Amalgam fillings (also known as silver fillings) are a type of filling that may be used to fill cavities, restore teeth affected by decay, and prevent further decay. Amalgam cavity fillings have been used for many years and are considered strong, durable and relatively inexpensive compared to other materials.
When should amalgam fillings be used?
Although strong and effective in treating cavities and tooth decay, some patients opt to receive an alternative to amalgam cavity fillings because their silver color can be visible while eating, speaking or smiling. Instead, patients may choose from the alternative pediatric cavity filling options offered at Park View Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, such as composite resin fillings or ceramic fillings (non-plastic and BPA free).
What does getting amalgam fillings involve?
Amalgam dental fillings are performed in-office. Before the procedure, a child will receive local anesthesia in order to numb the affected tooth and area around the tooth. We offer single tooth anesthesia technology, which provides a number of advantages for our pediatric patients. Once completely numbed, our pediatric dentists will use a drill to remove decay from the affected tooth and prepare it for the cavity filling. Then, the amalgam filling will be introduced.
