Retainers for children are an important aspect of any orthodontic treatment and are often used in conjunction with braces and Invisalign. Our pediatric orthodontist at Park View Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in NYC offers several different types of kids’ retainers to reposition and “retain” teeth in their proper place. What Are Dental Retainers?

Dental retainers are an orthodontic device comprised of wires, plastic or springs. There are various types of retainers for kids, which can be custom-made to fit your child’s unique needs. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, retainers slowly move teeth to the proper position and help retain their position once the desired placement has been achieved. Retainers can also be used at night to maintain results from braces.

What Types Of Retainers For Children Do You Offer?

Our team at Park View Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics can provide:

  • Fixed retainers
  • Removable retainers, which includes Hawley retainers and Essix clear retainers (which look similar to Invisalign)
  • Spring alignment retainers, which are a certain type of Hawley retainer with springs in them

Does My Child Need Retainers?

After an initial consultation with our top orthodontist, we will be able to determine whether your child is a good candidate for retainers. We will also be able to determine the type of kids’ retainer that is appropriate.

What Is The Kids’ Retainer Process?

In most cases, the process will start with getting digital dental scans. These can be completed in our office using our cutting-edge iTero scanner. Your orthodontist can then send these scans to the laboratory in order to fabricate your child’s retainer.

Once the retainer is fabricated, your child will come in to ensure the proper fit and function of the device. Depending on the type of retainer, a patient will need to come in to see the orthodontist for treatment monitoring and device adjustments. It is common for patients who use retainers (especially after other orthodontic treatments like braces or Invisalign) to continue wearing the device on a nightly basis in order to keep teeth properly aligned for years to come.

What Are The Benefits?

Kids’ retainers offer numerous benefits. Retainers can:

  • Keep teeth straight following other orthodontic treatments
  • Improve facial and smile appearance
  • Help retain proper bite alignment
  • Help boost confidence and self-esteem
  • Help improve overall oral health
  • Help improve function of teeth with chewing and speaking
