Braces for Kids in NYC
Braces are a popular treatment offered by pediatric orthodontist Dr. David Zarabi at Park View Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in NYC. This orthodontic treatment can be used to fix crooked, overlapping or overcrowded teeth, as well as bite problems such as overbite or underbite. While braces once meant significant discomfort and a mouth filled with metal, today’s braces for kids are much more comfortable and less noticeable. Our practice has been helping to make children’s smiles straighter and brighter since 1986. Learn more about our braces treatments below or schedule a consultation today!
What are braces?
Braces are an orthodontic treatment that straightens your child’s teeth using brackets bonded to each tooth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to the proper position. Gone are the days when a metal band with a bracket was placed around each tooth. Patients can now choose clear or metal brackets and, in some cases, the color of their orthodontic appliances. Wires are far less noticeable, and the latest materials are designed to move teeth faster with more comfort.
What do braces for kids involve?
After an initial consultation with Dr. Zarabi, he will be able to determine whether your child is a good candidate for braces treatment, or whether another orthodontic offering, such as Invisalign or a retainer, would be more suitable for his or her needs. In most cases, the process will start with getting digital X-rays or digital dental scans. These can be completed in our office using our cutting-edge equipment. On the day that your child is to receive braces, Dr. Zarabi will apply the brackets and necessary wires and provide clear instructions on how to care for teeth and braces during the course of treatment and which foods to avoid. While your child may experience some soreness following treatment, this discomfort typically subsides within the first few days.
Every few weeks, your child will need to see Dr. Zarabi for monitoring and adjustments until treatment is complete. Treatment length will vary depending on each child’s unique needs, but the average timeline is between one and two years.
At the end of treatment, patients will receive care instructions to ensure that their teeth remain straight and healthy for years to come. Often times a metal retainer may be recommended for nighttime use in order to keep teeth properly aligned.
